Ask Sophia

Healthy skin begins with understanding your skin. Every person's skin is unique and changes with age, lifestyle, hormones, stress and our tropical Singapore climate. With a medical background and a Dermalogica certified skin therapist, I believe every treatment should be personalised to your skin's needs - not a standard routine.

Below are some of the most common questions my clients ask. I hope they help you understand your skin a little better.

If you have a question that's not listed here, feel free to get in touch. I'll be happy to help.

Ask Sophia FAQ, let's go:

A. Understanding Your Skin

Question: Why is my skin still breaking out even though I have regular facials?

Acne isn't caused by one factor alone. Hormones, stress, diet, sleep, unsuitable skincare products and even environmental factors can all contribute to breakouts. While regular facials help improve skin health, long-term improvement usually requires a combination of professional treatments, appropriate homecare and lifestyle adjustments. Together, we'll identify what's triggering your skin and create a plan that works for you.

Question: Why is my skin looking dull even though I take care of it?

Dull skin is often caused by dehydration, a build-up of dead skin cells, stress, lack of sleep or slower cell turnover as we age. Professional exfoliation, hydration and targeted treatments can help restore brightness. Sometimes, making small changes to your skincare routine can also make a noticeable difference.

Question: Why does my skin suddenly become more sensitive?

Skin sensitivity can develop due to over-exfoliation, harsh skincare products, stress, weather changes or a weakened skin barrier. The first step is identifying the cause before introducing calming and barrier-repair treatments. Avoid experimenting with too many new products, as this may worsen the condition.

Question: My skin feels dry and oily at the same time. What does this mean?

This is actually very common. Your skin may be dehydrated rather than dry. Dehydrated skin lacks water, so it produces more oil to compensate. The solution isn't stronger cleansing but restoring hydration and strengthening the skin barrier with suitable products and treatments.

Question: What causes pigmentation and dark spots?

Pigmentation can result from sun exposure, acne marks, hormonal changes, inflammation and ageing. The earlier pigmentation is treated, the better the outcome. Consistent sun protection, professional treatments and suitable skincare can significantly improve skin tone over time.

Question: How can I tell if I am using the wrong skincare products?

Signs include persistent breakouts, redness, irritation, tightness, excessive oiliness or seeing little improvement despite using many products. More products don't necessarily mean better skin. Often, a simpler routine with products suited to your skin delivers the best results.

B. Acne, Ageing & Common Skin Concerns

Question: Can facials really improve acne and acne scars?

Yes. Professional facials help reduce congestion, calm inflammation and support skin healing. While acne scars may require treatments such as microneedling, a personalised treatment plan can significantly improve skin clarity, texture and overall health over time.

Question: Can facials help reduce enlarged pores?

Pore size is largely determined by genetics, but professional exfoliation, deep cleansing and collagen-stimulating treatments can minimise their appearance. Healthy, well-maintained skin often looks smoother and more refined.

Question: When should I start anti-ageing treatments?

Prevention is always easier than correction. Many people begin preventive skincare in their late twenties, while treatments in their thirties and beyond focus on hydration, collagen stimulation, pigmentation and improving skin firmness. It's never too early or too late to invest in healthy skin.

Question: Can facials improve fine lines and wrinkles?

Yes. Regular facials improve hydration, stimulate circulation and encourage collagen production, helping soften the appearance of fine lines. Advanced treatments such as microneedling can further improve skin texture and firmness when appropriate.

Question: Can facials help brighten my complexion?

Absolutely. Professional exfoliation removes dull surface cells while active ingredients help restore hydration and improve skin radiance. With regular treatments and the right homecare, you'll notice a healthier, brighter complexion.

C. Caring for Your Skin

Question: How often should I have a facial?

For most people, every four to six weeks is ideal, as this matches your skin's natural renewal cycle. However, treatment frequency depends on your skin condition and goals. I'll recommend a schedule that's appropriate for you.

Question: What should I do before and after my facial?

Before your appointment, avoid using strong exfoliants or retinol if advised. After your facial, keep your skin hydrated, wear sunscreen daily and follow the personalised aftercare instructions. This helps maximise your treatment results.

Question: Will my skin become dependent on regular facials?

No. Facials don't make your skin dependent. They simply help maintain healthy skin and support its natural renewal process. Think of them as regular maintenance, just like exercising or visiting the dentist.

Question: Do you recommend Dermalogica homecare products?

Yes but only products that are suitable for your skin. An effective homecare routine doesn't need to be complicated. I'll recommend products based on your skin's current needs rather than encouraging unnecessary purchases.

Question: Does my diet affect my skin?

Yes. Nutrition, hydration, stress and sleep all influence your skin's health. While skincare treatments play an important role, healthy lifestyle habits can greatly improve concerns such as acne, inflammation and premature ageing.

Question: Why do you customise every facial?

Because no two people—or even two appointments—are the same. Your skin changes with the seasons, stress levels, hormones and daily habits. By assessing your skin at every visit, I can provide the most appropriate treatment to help you achieve the best possible results.

Question: Can I still come if I'm not sure what my skin needs?

Of course. Many of my clients come to me feeling confused after trying different products or treatments. My role is to assess your skin, answer your questions and guide you towards a routine that works for you. You don't need to have all the answers before your first appointment.

D. Skincare by Sophia Facial Treatments

Question: Why should I choose Skincare by Sophia?

Every facial is customised to your skin's condition on the day of your appointment. I believe skincare should never be rushed or treated as a one-size-fits-all service. Clients often tell me they appreciate my gentle approach, honest recommendations and the fact that there is never any hard selling. My priority is to help you achieve healthier skin while providing a calm, relaxing experience that leaves you feeling refreshed inside and out.

Question: What happens during my first facial appointment?

Your first appointment begins with a skin consultation. we'll discuss your concerns, examine your skin and explain what I observe before recommending a personalised treatment. Throughout the session, we'll explain each step so you understand what is being done and why. My goal is for you to leave not only with healthier skin, but also with a better understanding of how to care for it.

Question: What is LuminFusion™ and who is it suitable for?

LuminFusion is Dermalogica's advanced skin treatment that combines exfoliation, active ingredient infusion and skin renewal to improve brightness, hydration and smoothness. It's ideal for dull, dehydrated or ageing skin and provides an instant healthy glow with minimal downtime.

Question: Is microneedling suitable for everyone?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses fine needles to make miniscule, evenly spaced micro-injuries to the skin. This triggers the body’s wound healing process, stimulates healthy surrounding tissue to repair the damage, and brings the skin back to its healthiest looking state. It helps to address many skin concerns including acne scars, enlarged pores and fine lines. However, it may not be recommended if you have active acne, skin infections or certain medical conditions. A consultation is essential to determine whether it's right for you.

Question: Can I combine different facial treatments?

Yes. Depending on your skin's needs, treatments can often be combined or alternated to address hydration, pigmentation, acne and ageing more effectively. I'll recommend the safest and most suitable combination for your skin.

Question: How long does it take to see results?

Many clients notice healthier, more radiant skin almost immediately after their first facial. More complex concerns such as acne, pigmentation and ageing require consistency. Healthy skin is a journey rather than a quick fix.

Question: Is there any downtime after a facial?

Most facials require little or no downtime. You may experience slight redness after exfoliation or advanced treatments, but this usually subsides within a day or two. we'll provide aftercare advice to help you achieve the best results.

Question: Do you hard-sell treatment packages or products?

No. I believe trust is earned through results, not sales pressure. I'll only recommend treatments or homecare products if I genuinely believe they'll benefit your skin. Many clients tell me they appreciate being able to relax during their facial without feeling pressured to purchase packages or unnecessary products. When clients feel respected and genuinely cared for, they naturally return because they value the experience and not because they feel obligated.

Question: What do you hope every client experiences after a treatment?

More than beautiful skin, I hope every client leaves feeling relaxed, cared for and confident. My treatments are about improving skin health while creating a peaceful space where you can slow down, recharge and enjoy a little time for yourself. Healthy skin is important, but so is feeling genuinely cared for.

Healthy skin begins with understanding your own skin.
